'Music is one of my passions - I love music, all right!'
Bernadette's family had a great influence on her love of music. 'My two older sisters, they played and I sang along with them. Music is naturally in the family. Everyone plays music and I just join in. I'm Tokelauan born but I've lived in New Zealand since I was a child.
'When I learnt how to play guitar chords, I learnt from the Sisters of Mercy (may their soul rest in peace, those that have passed away). I was living with them for a time. I used to play often, now just when I see an instrument. I've got guitars, ukulele, and a harmonica.'
I really enjoy playing at the soup kitchen. I was asked to bring a group at Christmas, playing carols - that's when the photo was taken before coming in to Christmas dinner. It's really wonderful coming here for the socialising. There's a warmth and a family atmosphere. Sometimes it's challenging and I wish I had a magic wand that I could wave so they can't say something again'. 'The music is calming here, it helps soothe the soul.'
'I have friends here - everybody is friends - I sit at any table.'
'I have no idea how many years I have been coming. If you are running around all day, it's wonderful to come and sit without having to think about preparing food of the cost of it. It helps with the budget. Mainly I come for the socialising.'
